I hope you've been well and staying healthily busy.  Here are a few announcements to wrap up The Lord of the Flies:
  • If you haven't already, join Google Classroom using your school email and this code: 6oixyoa--only 8 of you have done so as of this post.
    • ​I've posted the assignments for the rest of LOTF, as well as the links and procedures for uploading your work.
  • I'd very much prefer a digital copy of your LOTF work, as I'll have to quarantine anything submitted to me at GRC, so I don't know when I'll be able to grade it.
    • ​If you absolutely must submit a paper copy, please read the following carefully, and adhere to all safety protocols so no one gets sick or in trouble:
      • ​Lowther will be at school on Friday, 04/17, from 9am-3pm.
        • ​Go to the back of the building, where the fine arts classroom windows are (100s).
        • If someone is already walking around back there, WAIT until they've gone into their car, then step out and go to that back wall.
        • There will be a box clearly labeled "ENGLISH/AP".  Make sure your name is on whatever you’re submitting and just drop it in the box.
          • ​If you're also dropping off Sound of Music books, make sure to put that in the "Sound of Music" box.
        • ​There will be other boxes and materials for Lowther's classes; ignore those and don't touch anything else.
        • When you’re done, head back to your car, making sure not to go near anyone else.
      • PLEASE do not compromise the health of others or yourself--be proactive and keep your social distance!
      • This procedure has been approved by a principal; please follow it carefully!
  • ​​Some of you bought your own copies of LOTF from me.  If you would like a refund of your money, please follow the procedure outlined below.  If you bought a book, but would like to just go ahead and keep the school text I gave you on Friday, 03/13, that is fine.  You just need to complete the same form as below.
    • The procedure is not simple, as we have to follow the official Kentucky Department of Education Redbook procedures for School Accounting Funds:
      • Lowther has to fill out a Purchase Order request for every student who has submitted money directly to her for show shirts.
      • The bookkeeper must then manually enter each purchase order into the accounting system.
      • A check must be cut for each recipient and mailed to the home address provided.
      • Because our bookkeeper is processing so many of these requests from other teachers throughout the school who have also had to cancel events and trips, it may take a while to receive your refund, but it will be processed as soon as possible.

  • Note: This form must align with the Multiple Receipt Form the student signed when paying for the shirt, which is on file with the GRC bookkeeper and with Ms.Lowther.  Students not appearing on the form will not receive a refund.

Tasks
  • Read Chapters 1-6 of Lord of the Flies
  • Complete the Handbook through page 24, except as noted below.
  • On your own notebook paper, keep notes for the following:
    • ​Include QUOTES and page numbers, as well as a brief description of how it applies to each item.
      • CHARACTERS explored on pages 5-8
        • ​Full page for Jack and Ralph; half page each for those on pp. 7-8.
      • THEMES explored on pages 37-40
      • SYMBOLS  explored on page 42
      • You won't be able to complete these pages in the Handbook until you've read the whole book, so your handwritten notes will be collected for a grade, and will be essential in completing the paperwork after we've read it all.​
  • Handbook and hand-written notes are due upon return on 04/07/20.
  • ​There will be a reading quiz upon return on 04/07/20.
    • The quiz is never about plot, but about characters, motivation, theme, symbolism, etc.
Notes
  • As always, make sure to write in complete sentences whenever possible.
  • Take care not to plagiarize (from a book, website, friend, or other source).
    • Doing so will result in a zero for the portion plagiarized!​

  1. Open your "POL20" Google Doc that we’ve been working on for Poetry Out Loud.
  2. Go to the bottom of the Doc and make a new page.
  3. Go to Poetry Out Loud and copy your poem from title through the end of the poem.
  4. Paste on the new page of the Doc.
  5. Add line numbers to the left of each line.
  6. Select the THREE MOST IMPORTANT techniques the poet uses to reveal his/her theme/message.
    1. Technique examples: symbolism, rhythm/meter, literary devices (e.g., imagery, extended metaphor, metaphor), structure, grammatical flexibility
    2. An example of how you should format your outline is below of this post.
  7. ​Send Lowther a Remind text to let her know you’re ready for her to look at it and give you comments. Once approved, or if you are sure you’re on the right track you may proceed.
  8. In a well-formed (3-pt/5-paragraph style) essay, discuss the three most important techniques the poet uses to express his/her theme and/or message.  As always, be sure to use quotes from the text, but you may also refer to the line number when just needing to cite something quickly.

  1. Get out your numbered Chromebooks.  If anything is wrong with your computer, put that number on the "Wall of Shame" with a VERY brief explanation (e.g., unplugged) using pink Expo marker.
  2. Head to noredink.com and sign in.  If you don't remember your info, Remind text me immediately.  I'm going to be unavailable after 1:15pm.
    1. IF you never signed up for the class, use the code "tidy table 89" and sign up with your first/last names. 
    2. Don't spend too much time adjusting your interests, but do put enough in there to make life interesting for the next 20-40 minutes.
  3. Find the assignment in your Dashboard (I think): "Lesson: Learn & Practice Active/Passive Voice".
  4. Complete the Lesson, then the Practice.  Earn the grade you want--don't just give up if you get it wrong!
  5. AFTER you complete Task 4, go on and take "Quiz: Active/Passive Voice".  Don't cheat/copy off a neighbor.
  6. When you're done, look around and see who else is done and find a partner that is (unless there are no possible options by the time everyone's done with NoRedInk):
    1. Not in your grade
    2. Not in your major
  7. Sit together and go to www.powtoons.com.  One of you with an email you can access right now must sign up for a FREE account (don't pay for anything!).  Make your username your name, nothing cutesy.
  8. The other person should open up a new Google Doc and title it E910_ActivePassivePowtoons_Lastnames.  Replace with both your last names, in alphabetical order.  Be sure to type the title of the Doc correctly!
    1. Share with Lowther and the partner.
  9. Work together to make a Powtoon that clearly demonstrates the difference between Active and Passive voice, using:
    1. A new Powtoon title: E910_ActivePassive_Lastnames
    2. Funny/interesting sentences in the style of NoRedInk and Lowther's vocab quizzes.  DO NOT steal sentences from NoRedInk.
    3. Eye-catching/pleasing graphics, but don't overdo it.  Choose a free template you like, if you prefer and it works for you.  You have a "PRO" trial account for four days, and this is due at the end of Thursday, so be careful with timing your work and choosing your templates/graphics/music so you don't get locked out.
    4. Pleasant music that isn't distracting.
  10. Don't get so bogged down in the creation of the Powtoon that you don't get any actual content done!!
  11. What's on the Google Doc?
    1. For each slide you make in Powtoons, type out on the Doc what info you're including.  You must include, in your own, regular language:
      1. Title slide with names (e.g., "Active & Passive Voice, Katherine Lowther")
      2. Definition of Active voice, with when it is best to use
      3. Example of Active voice:
      4. Anti-example of Active voice:
      5. Definition of Passive voice, with why one should attempt to avoid it, BUT ALSO when it's ok to use
      6. Example of Passive voice
      7. Anti-example of Passive voice
      8. FOUR "quiz" type questions in which you try to stump the class. (When making the Powtoons, be sure to delay the answer or be able to pause the video when you show it in class.)
      9. The source for EACH of your definitions/outside info, next to the item you used the outside info for.  DO NOT PLAGIARIZE--you must reword anything coming from a source into your own, regular language.
  12. NoRedInk items are due by 3pm today.  Anything else not completed today will carry over to Thursday's class, but everything is due Thursday by 2pm and videos WILL be shared at that time.
