FINE arts cohort

Mission and Purpose

The GRC High School Fine Arts Cohort is an auditioned program whose goal is to offer students a high-quality arts education to students passionate about the arts, regardless of background or previous experience.  We seek to allow students to interact and communicate in ways that are possible only through communal creative experiences.

The Fine Arts Cohort program will engender a love for the arts, an appreciation of various talents and abilities, and an understanding of the creative and performing arts through rigorous and varied instruction throughout a student's high school career.

Cohort Overview

All the application materials can be found at this link.

Overview: Students will audition for entry into the Fine Arts Cohort, usually at the end of their 8th grade year, though current high school students are also encouraged to apply.  Once accepted, students will focus their study on their chosen arts discipline throughout high school.  Students completing the program and successfully completing the benchmark performance requirements will receive a unique cord to be worn during graduation.

Students will receive an in-depth, project-based arts instruction.  Students in the program will dramatically increase their personal abilities in their arts own disciplines and will learn how to work with students across the other arts areas, through collaborative community performances and exhibitions.
Additional program requirements
  • In addition to their Fine Arts Cohort major class, students will take an arts class in their area each year.  Music majors will take a band/choir/orchestra class each year.  Drama and dance majors will take Intro to Theater and Intro to Music Theater (they may take any additional arts class upon completion of these theater classes).  Visual art majors will take an additional art class of the appropriate level.
  • Arts Events: Students must attend four outside Arts Events per semester as part of the student’s Cohort grade.  Students may not use Arts Events in which they are participating.  Generally, the group takes 2-4 off-campus field trips each year, with 2-4 in-school field trips as well.
  • Volunteer Hours: Students must engage in 5 volunteer hours per semester as part of the student’s Cohort grade.  Students may not use events in which they are participating.
  • School Musical: All Cohort students must participate in the production of the annual school musical as part of their class grade, whether on stage, in the pit orchestra, in the tech booth, backstage, set design, or any other number of roles required to put on a large-scale production.  GRC's musical usually takes place in late April.
  • Winter and Spring Showcases: These end-of-semester performances/exhibitions serve as students’ final exam grades.  These occur after school hours, usually on-campus.
