Fine Arts Cohort
Audition Requirements

The following is an outline of audition requirements.  After completing the application, you will be scheduled for an in-person audition/interview (likely in May).  The items listed below are what will be involved in the live audition/interview portion.  They are listed in the order of: Visual Art, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Drama, Dance.  Review the requirements below and apply here.  Auditions will be after-school on May 16 and during the day on May 17.  Students, please check your email for a form to complete about your availability.

VISUAL ART

Part One: Portfolio (4 or more works of art) Please bring a minimum of FOUR artworks to your audition that you want to share, including at least the following:
  1. Self-Portrait
  2. Landscape
  3. Still-Life
  4. Wild Card (student choice)
For all works:
  • At least two different media must be represented.
  • Artworks that could be disturbed during travel should be framed or have an appropriately sized cover sheet for protection.
  • Feel free to bring more than 4 works to your audition, but no more than 8 please. Students will NOT be penalized for bringing only 4 works.
  • Please also bring a sketchbook you wish to share that shows practice, experimentation, and creative problem solving for projects and other creative endeavors.
We are not looking for perfect, finished pieces of artwork in your sketchbook. We want to see your personality, practice, and your creative process. If you have finished drawings in your sketchbook that you want to share, that's awesome! If it is completely random and doesn't make any sense, that is also awesome!

Special Note: While cartoon art is valid and interesting, cartoon and anime should not comprise the entirety of the student’s portfolio.

Part Two: Explanation, Personal Questions and "On-site" creative task

a. Present ONE of your four prepared pieces and explain:
  • Name of the piece
  • Date (approximate date is fine)
  • Medium
  • The concept(s) behind the piece
b. Students will complete an on site activity or creative task that will be explained on the day of audition to all artists auditioning. Students will use the materials that are available to them and should not bring any of their own materials to use for this task.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].
VOCAL MUSIC
Prepare a vocal selection of your choice.  Choose an art song, traditional/folk song, or music theater piece that best shows off your voice and personality.  Please do not choose a pop song.
  • If you’re unsure of an appropriate song, please contact [email protected] for advice. He is happy to help!
  • Memorization is strongly encouraged but not required.
  • You are not required or encouraged to use accompaniment for this song, however you are welcome to do so if you can find a recording online or you know an accompanist who is willing to play for you. Make sure it’s in a key that is right for you.
SPECIAL NOTE: YOU WILL NOT EARN MORE POINTS OR BE PENALIZED WHETHER YOU PERFORM A CAPPELLA OR WITH ACCOMPANIMENT. It is entirely your choice, but you’ll need to be accurate and in tune either way.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
This includes band and orchestra instruments as well as piano
  1. Prepare two scales of your choice.
  2. Prepare one solo piece of your choice.
  3. There will be a brief sightreading excerpt as well
Note:
  • Memorization is not required for the prepared piece.
  • Accompanists are neither provided nor encouraged. However, if you desire an accompaniment for a piece that requires it, it is your responsibility to procure an appropriate recording either on-line or having an accompanist record.
  • Choose a piece that best displays your performance abilities, from technique to expressivity.
  • If you’re unsure about an appropriate piece, contact [email protected], and he will be happy to help.  Your band/orchestra teacher will have advice as well.
DRAMA
Prepare a monologue from a PUBLISHED PLAY.
  • Memorization is required.
  • Your monologue performance should be between 60-90 seconds in length.
  • Character and subject matter should be appropriate for your age/physical type.
  • Please avoid dialect pieces, text that is not from a published play or musical, and Shakespeare.
  • Costumes and props are not encouraged for this performance.
NOTE:
  • Be able to discuss the artistic choices you made for the performance
  • This is NOT a singing audition; please keep your monologue focused to dramatic interpretations of the spoken word.
If you're unsure about an appropriate monologue, contact [email protected].
DANCE
  1. Prepare a solo performance in any style you choose.  It should best exhibit your personality, style, and interests.
  2. Before performing, briefly explain the story/narrative/emotion driving this dance.
Musical accompaniment must be provided by the student (live or recorded)
  • Recorded accompaniment can be brought in the form of a personal device; amplification will be available
  • We have the ability to permit use of our piano if the auditioner requires it for live accompaniment and can provide an accompanist
A costume appropriate for your dance is acceptable, but not required. Proper footwear is required; barefoot dancing is prohibited. Normal/appropriate dance attire is also acceptable. No extra credit is awarded for a costume, nor will you be penalized for a lack of costume.
