NTI Assignments 03/13-04/06 UPDATED!

3/13/2020

Read carefully, as the assignments have been updated (03/16/20)!

Senior Directed Plays:
  • Memorize your lines & consider blocking.

Cohort Drama/Dance:
  • Read Chapters 1-3* of Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life (provided in class, or download/print here:
    • Chapters 1-2
    • Chapters 3-4 (*Update: Read CHAPTER 3, but not 4, unless NTI days are extended)
  • Annotate the text as you read--have a conversation with the text from your own perspective, life, and experience, rather than annotating as you would for literature
  • Create a Google Doc CCD_CreativeHabit_Yourlastname
    • Share with Lowther at [email protected]
    • **If you weren't in class to pick up the reading packet, "Annotate" the chapters on the Google Doc
      • Clearly indicate which page numbers/quotes you're responding to.
    • Grades will be given throughout the 10 NTI days for the Google Doc reflections--don't wait until the end!
  • Complete the exercises at the end of Chapter 2, and 3 and reflect/respond in the Google Doc for each.
    • Include the date and chapter heading for each exercise:
      • Ex.  03/15/20. Chapter 2, Exercise 1.  Blah blah blah in complete sentences of course and be honest about it all.
  • Bring your completed annotated packet to class upon return, and make sure the Google Doc is shared w/Lowther.
  • If NTI days are extended, I'll update with further directions, which may be further chapters or an entirely different assignment.  I'll send out a Remind, if this occurs.

Need a Monologue?

11/19/2019

  • Monologue selection due Friday; perform from memory on Monday
    • Lowther must not have heard this previous monologue from you already
    • As close to one-minute as possible
    • Submit monologue on a piece of paper with the following:
      • Title of play and playwright
      • Written monologue text
      • A written summary, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, of CONTEXT:
        • Character (actual)
        • Motivation (internal and external)
        • Action (before, during, after)
      • A written response explaining why you chose this monologue (CONNECT)

  • Theatrefolk has some good free resources:
    • Monologues for Girls
    • Monologues for Guys
    • Advice for CHOOSING a monologue (PDF file)
  • 5 Alternative Classical Monologues for Men
  • The Monologuer from Backstage.com (free but some annoying pop-ups--just click, "No, I don't want to audition")
    • Teen Monologues
    • General Monologues
  • I have many more from Theatrefolk and others, including full scripts, printed in my classroom--you just have to ask and make time to come down and look!

  • The Backstage Guide to Delivering a Monologue

Complete the reflection HERE
  • USE CORRECT GRAMMAR AND SYNTAX.
  • Yes, this is a grade.

"If you want to purchase a gallery download of all the photos on this page, click on "Buy photos" and then choose "Gallery Download."  For $15, you will receive an email from SmugMug with a link to download the whole gallery (usually 200+ photos of the show).  Note that you can only do this from a computer, not your phone or iPad! If you only want a few photos, downloads are only $1 each. (Watermark will not be on downloaded photos).  You have full rights to print and share any purchased photos.  You may also purchase prints and other products from this page.

Please don't put the whole gallery on Facebook, as that would allow anyone to download them for free from Facebook. Sharing a few of your favorites is encouraged, however, with proper photo credit.  If you share one on social media, I'd appreciate a shout-out to Sally Horowitz Photography.

          • Finger foods, rather than pot-luck things that need giant serving spoons.  Just easy to eat with toothpicks, forks, fingers

Wednesday, 10/09/19 DUTB Tasks

10/9/2019

(This is just copied from yesterday's post, scroll down to read the rest of the info about Monday, etc.)
  • Come around during Advisory to help me.  Look at the end of this post for available tasks.
  • The Winchester Sun AND Crosby's 5th period class is coming to see you.  I gave them a heads up that it's still rough & that the set is still in progress, so they'll understand.
  • However, that means you need to be off-book!  As of tomorrow, we have one week before COHORT comes in to watch the FINAL DRESS REHEARSAL, then Thursday is the public show, then Friday/Saturday is the competition!
    • I hate to tie it to grades, but do remember this is a co-curricular project, so if you're not off book tomorrow, you will lose 10% each day you have that book in hand and I'll also start deducting a point every time you ask for lines.
  • Bring whatever props/costume pieces you have tomorrow so we can see what's going on.
  • ADVISORY TASKS (Wednesday & Wednesday, anything left over will be done Saturday (me) and Monday--up for grabs:
    • ***Tape off a precise 10x10 foot square off-stage***
    • **Tape off a "Do not cross" line off stage so we don't accidentally start the show**
    • Nail in the false front sides
    • Help Lowther make the programs for Thursday's public show
    • Make a Sign-Up Genius for Thursday's artist reception refreshments
    • Put up posters around the school
    • Demo any remaining Luan from 2x4s
    • Work on light cues (showing Lowther)
    • Sound effects backstage (siren, explosion, crash)
    • Practice monologue/song with Lowther
    • Practice scenes with each other
    • Practice tech challenge, using the papers Imani has
    • Paint "sunset colors" on a Luan board for each of the girls
    • Constructing the periaktoi (triangular prism) 3rd side (maybe have to wait until Monday)
    • Mark off a 38" and 37" equilateral triangle on a specific piece of plywood
    • Attach the lazy susan to the same plywood
    • Remove casters from the same plywood

KTF Updates & Directions for Sub Day 10/08/19

10/8/2019

  • TODAY, Tuesday, 10/08
    • Continue running from where we stopped yesterday. Try to be off-book.  Doubles, be ready to catch "lines".  Don't fool around on your phones.  Instead watch to solidfy blocking, and run through lines (quietly) as they go along.
    • Clear the stage at 3:32.
    • No after school today.
    • Charity, give notes as possible to those who I mentioned yesterday.
    • Read announcements for tomorrow and beyond.
  • TOMORROW, Wednesday,  10/09:
    • Come around during Advisory to help me.  I'll write another bullet point with available tasks lower down.
    • The Winchester Sun AND Crosby's 5th period class is coming to see you.  I gave them a heads up that it's still rough & that the set is still in progress, so they'll understand.

      • Constructing the periaktoi (triangular prism) 3rd side (maybe have to wait until Monday)
  • Rehearsal Monday, 10/14, 9am-12pm:
    • You know I'm usually exactly on time, but probably Monday I'll be earlier, since my family will be heading off to school as normal.  If you need to be dropped off early, let me know, and I'll let you in to practice or help me with KTF tasks.
      • Andrew, especially, will need to come early if possible, to go over lights.
      • Any backstage people might also come early to learn the scene changes
    • Full dress rehearsal and OFF-BOOK.  Olivia will be getting with you for hair and make-up as needed.
      • Note my warning about grades, above.  By Monday, costumes must be ready, otherwise I'll be taking 10% off daily as well.  Please don't do that to yourselves.
      • Any backstage members must be in all black--top to bottom--for all rehearsals from here on out.  You will be on stage and doing a lot of extremely important set changes!
    • Lainie and Olivia also need to be there, even though they aren't performing at competition.  Y'all will work on painting and other tasks that are necessary for having everything ready for Monday's full-dress rehearsal, then our first real audience on Wednesday, 10/16.
    • MOST IMPORTANT TASK:::::::::: Time the show & make cuts!
    • I'll also give you the schedule of when we're leaving (EXTREMELY EARLY FRIDAY MORNING, YOU MUST SLEEP ASAP THURSDAY NIGHT!!!!!!!!), performing, doing IEs (VERY EARLY FRIDAY MORNING!!), workshop requirements, schedules, rules, rules for performance, everything.
    • Anyone who can stay to help with putting finishing touches on everything (nailing, sawing, drilling, painting, crying), would be very much appreciated.  Otherwise it will just be me and a bunch of dangerous power tools.
  • Tuesday, 10/15:
    • In-class full-dress rehearsal.
    • All Cast A should plan to stay, and anyone working tech.  It shouldn't be too much after 4:15, but we need to run the full show from the start of class.  Arrange for pick-up by then.
  • Wednesday, 10/16:
    • Cohort will come watch the final full-dress rehearsal.  All cast members will be in places.  Only Olivia & Lainie do not have tasks at that time, but can watch/work on  whatever is left to do (printing & folding programs, most likely)
  • Thursday, 10/17:
    • Work spots during class
    • Plan to stay after school to get ready
      • Get tables from custodians
    • Call time is 5:15pm
    • Art gallery w/my father-in-law, Bob Howard, opens at 5:30pm
