Remind Text: @pianogrc to 81010

Option A (Piano/Keyboard at home):
  • Email [email protected] with the last page number you have in your textbook, and I'll email you the next set and discuss options for submitting recordings.

Option B (open to any Piano student):

Pianist/Composer Research

Initial Task
  • Select a pianist or composer who writes primarily for the piano.
  • He/she does not have to be a classical musician, but does have to be someone famous.
  • Ideas:
    • Classical: Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Johan Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahams, Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Fanny OR Felix Mendelssohn, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Lang Lang, Glenn Gould, Vladimir Ashkenazy
    • Popular/Jazz/Blues: Alicia Keys, John Legend, Norah Jones, Elton John, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Ben Folds, Tori Amos, Bruce Hornsby, Jim Brickman
  • Remind text me at @grcpiano (text to 81010) if you have an idea that isn’t listed and want approval!

Set Up
  • Create a PowerPoint, typed/written essay, brochure, Tri-Fold posterboard, MovieMaker project, or some other creative project (get it approved by me if it’s not one listed)
    • Use correct grammar and complete sentences whenever possible, especially when writing an essay
  • If using Google Docs or Google Slides, title it Piano_PianistProject_Yourlastname ← make sure you replace “Yourlastname” with literally YOUR last name!
    • Share the file with me at [email protected]
  • Otherwise, bring in a jump drive, paper, send me a YouTube link, or whatever the day we return.
  • Make sure to include your sources for each portion of information as you go along!!!  Website addresses are fine, but Remind text Lowther if you have a question.

Information Required
Part One:
  • Composer/pianist’s full name
  • Birth & death dates (if applicable)
  • Country of birth, and where they lived/worked, if different
  • Background & early years
  • How did they get into music/piano?
  • Any difficulties/struggles they encountered throughout their lives
  • What was their big break/how did they become famous?
    • Were they more famous for being a composer or pianist during their lifetime?  Is this still true?
  • Adult musical career
  • Personal relationships
  • If dead, later musical career/ how they died.
    • Were they still famous later in life?
  • Lasting impact & importance on music
  • List several major PIANO works, and the date of composition
  • If creating an electronic document/project, be sure to include clear photos/paintings/images of them

Part Two:
  • SELECT ONE FAMOUS PIANO work of theirs, and listen to it on YouTube or wherever.
    • Provide me the title and year of composition
    • Describe the TEMPO
    • Describe the MOOD
      • How does it make you feel?  Are all parts of the piece the same?
  • If there are lyrics, write/copy them out, and discuss what the song is about.
  • What do you like about it?  What is your personal connection to it?  Why did you choose it?
    • “Nothing”, or something like, “I like it because it’s pretty” is an invalid response.  Be as specific as possible!

Anything plagiarized/directly copied from any source will receive a zero.  Don’t do it!

THIS IS YOUR GRADE for the weeks we are not in school; not completing it will result in a zero for two weeks’ worth of grades/participation! :(

Good luck, and let me know via Remind text if you need help or if you’ve emailed me something to look at/grade.  Stay healthy!
