UPDATE on APAH Exam Format

4/27/2020

 NEW INFORMATION & DETAILS!!
(Quoted directly from AP College Board)

Test Date: Friday, May 15, 2020
Test Time: 12 p.m. Eastern Time

Exam Timing: 45 minutes, with 5 minutes added for uploading responses
  • Students will have 25 minutes to read and respond to Question 1, and then 5 minutes to upload their response.
  • After uploading the response to Question 1, students will have 15 minutes to respond to Question 2, with 5 additional minutes to upload their response to Question 2.
  • Once their response to Question 1 has been submitted, they cannot go back to it.

Question 1: COMPARE & CONTRAST
  • 25 minutes
  • 65% of exam weight
  • Question 1 is a long essay question that assesses students’ ability to compare 2 works of art:
    • The first work is required and is part of the image set. Although an image of this work will be provided as part of the question prompt, there will be no identifying information.
    • The second work is selected by the student from a list of suggested works from the required image set (but with no images provided). Students may instead select a different work of art from any content area to compare with the required work.
  • Question 1 assesses students’ ability to do the following:
    • Describe visual or contextual elements of both the required and selected works of art
    • Use specific and relevant evidence to explain how the 2 works of art are similar and different in how they convey meaning.
    • Use specific and relevant evidence to explain the meaning or significance of similarities and differences between the 2 works of art.
  • Corresponds to FRQ Question Type 1, in which:
    • Students will need to specify which work of art they choose for the second work. However, detailed identification information (such as artist, culture, date, etc.) is not required, and points will not be granted for providing detailed identification information.
    • For the second work of art (selected by the student), the student may choose any of: (a) one of a list of suggested works, provided with the exam; (b) any work from the course (Units 1–10) that is relevant to the prompt, or (c) any work that is relevant to the prompt, even if it is outside the 250 required works for the course.

Question 2: CONTINUITY & CHANGE
  • 15 minutes
  • 35% of exam weight
  • Question 2 is a short essay question that assesses students’ ability to analyze the relationships between a work of art from the image set (image provided as part of the question prompt, but without any identifying information) and a related artistic tradition, style, and/or practice. This question assesses students’ ability to do the following:
    • Describe visual or contextual elements of a work of art.
    • Explain how or why the work of art demonstrates continuity or change within an artistic tradition or practice.
    • Analyze meaning or significance of an art historical interpretation of the work of art provided.
  • Corresponds to FRQ Question Type 6.

Task Verbs Used in Free-Response Questions:
  • Attribute: Identify the artist, culture, art-historical style, or object type of an unknown work of art.
  • Describe: Provide the relevant characteristics of a specified topic or work of art.
  • Explain: Provide information about how or why a relationship, process, pattern, position, situation, or outcome occurs, using evidence and/or reasoning.
    • Explain "how" typically requires analyzing the relationship, process, pattern, position, situation, or outcome;
    • Explain "why" typically requires analysis of motivations or reasons for the relationship, process, pattern, position, situation, or outcome.
  • Identify: Indicate or provide information about a work of art, including title or designation, artist, culture of origin, style, date, or materials, without elaboration or explanation.
  • Justify attribution: Provide rationale or justification for an attribution of an unknown work of art using specific visual and/or contextual evidence.

If you must...

4/16/2020

Students,

I hope you've been well and staying healthily busy.  Here are a few announcements to wrap up
the time we have before the AP Art History exam on May 15.
  • If you haven't already, read the announcement below (from 03/21) about the new, online, at-home AP exam.  AP/CollegeBoard should already have sent you an email about your specific testing schedule.
  • If you haven't already, join Google Classroom using your school email and this code: kw5wx5x
    • I'm continuously uploading materials for the remainder of the image set, as well as the links and procedures for uploading your work on Google Classroom.
  • I'd very much prefer a digital copy of your unit handbooks, as I'll have to quarantine anything submitted to me at GRC, so I don't know when I'll be able to grade it.
    • If you absolutely must submit a paper copy, please read the following carefully, and adhere to all safety protocols so no one gets sick or in trouble:
      • Lowther will be at school on Friday, 04/17, from 9am-3pm.
        • Go to the back of the building, where the fine arts classroom windows are (100s).
        • If someone is already walking around back there, WAIT until they've gone into their car, then step out and go to that back wall.
        • There will be a box clearly labeled "ENGLISH/AP".  Make sure your name is on whatever you’re submitting and just drop it in the box.
          • If you're also dropping off Sound of Music books, make sure to put that in the "Sound of Music" box.
        • There will be other boxes and materials for Lowther's classes; ignore those and don't touch anything else.
        • When you’re done, head back to your car, making sure not to go near anyone else.
      • PLEASE do not compromise the health of others or yourself--be proactive and keep your social distance!
      • This procedure has been approved by a principal; please follow it carefully!
  • If you have requested a paper copy of the remaining packets for the image set, look for the packet with your name clearly marked on a Post-It on the front.  They will be in alphabetical order, spread out 6' from each other.   I will not make enough for everyone, so if you will want one that day, you MUST email or Remind text me prior to midnight Thursday, 04/16.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes and missing you all,
Lowther
